Court Cases and Official Appeal Processes in Finland: A General Information Guide

A "court case" or official dispute process in Finland is not a single procedure. Civil cases, criminal proceedings, employment disputes and administrative appeals are subject to different courts, time limits and procedures.

First identify the type of dispute

    • Administrative matters: against a decision by Migri or another public authority, the hallinto-oikeus route may arise.
    • Civil and commercial disputes: contract, debt or company disputes may be heard in the käräjäoikeus or before other competent bodies.
    • Employment disputes: for the employment contract, pay and working conditions, the route depends on the nature of the claim.
    • Criminal matters: the police, prosecution and criminal court process follows separate rules.

Deadlines and the competent body are case-specific

The most critical first checks in a dispute are the date of the decision or event, the limitation or appeal period, the competent body, the evidence and the legal outcome sought. Applying a general deadline found online to every case is wrong.

    Preparing documents

Decisions, contracts, invoices, bank transactions, messages, emails, official correspondence and other evidence should be put in date order; originals preserved and any need for translation identified. Personal data and confidential documents should be shared securely.

    Legal representation and advice

Where court representation, a legal opinion, litigation strategy or an assessment of legal liability is needed, case-specific support should be obtained from a legal professional in Finland with the relevant qualification. The rules on representation and the costs risk differ by type of case.

    ENB Consulting's role

ENB Consulting can support general process information, preparing the case and document chronology, organising official correspondence, coordinating translation and experts, and referral to a suitable expert or authority.

This does not mean that ENB Consulting is a law firm, a court representative or a legal adviser qualified in all areas of law. No outcome is guaranteed, and official and court deadlines must be verified from the specific case's documents.
