Public Transport in Finland

1. Finland does not have one national local-transport ticket system
The Helsinki region uses HSL, Tampere uses Nysse, Turku uses Föli and other cities have their own local transport authorities. Even where similar payment methods are available, fare zones, transfer validity and discount rules can differ by region.
When moving to a new city, first identify the local transport authority and official app. General mapping services can show routes, but the official operator should be the source for ticket validity, discounts and transfer rules.
2. HSL has five fare zones in 2026
The HSL area consists of five zones, A, B, C, D and Zone E introduced on 2 June 2026. Zone E includes Järvenpää and northern parts of Tuusula. Your ticket must cover every zone through which you travel.
The HSL Journey Planner shows the zones crossed and the ticket required. Because fare products use zone combinations rather than simple one-zone tickets, checking the route search is safer than guessing from the map.
3. Contactless payment is convenient but does not replace every ticket type
In HSL, adult single tickets can be bought at card readers with contactless debit/credit cards and supported mobile wallets such as Apple Pay. The payment card becomes the ticket and the same card is presented during inspection.
Season tickets, student discounts, child fares and other special products can require the HSL app, HSL card or another sales channel. With contactless payment, simply tapping the card without selecting the correct zones is not sufficient.

- Ensure the ticket is valid before travel/entering an uncovered zone
- Check official eligibility for any discount
- Keep the same contactless payment card available for inspection
4. Use national and local data together for journeys across Finland
Fintraffic's national journey planner combines route and timetable data for multiple modes and cities. For long-distance trips, planning the train or coach together with the final local connection is particularly useful outside the largest urban areas.
For real-time disruption or cancellation information, also check the official operator channel. A journey planner is a routing tool; ticket changes, compensation and carrier-specific conditions are governed by the relevant operator.
5. Separate intercity rail tickets from local transport tickets
VR intercity tickets and local public-transport tickets are different products. Some commuter trains within the HSL area use HSL tickets, while journeys extending beyond the HSL area can require a different ticket.
For connecting journeys, check the origin, destination and validity of each ticket. In airport, intercity rail and final local bus/tram combinations, do not assume that one ticket automatically covers the entire trip.
6. For regular travel, compare monthly total cost rather than single fares
If you commute daily, compare single, multi-journey and season-ticket options against your actual number of trips. Student or other discounted customer groups can have eligibility and identification/residence requirements.
Tax deductibility of commuting costs depends on distance, available transport and Vero's annual rules. Choose the travel product based on actual mobility needs rather than assuming a particular tax deduction.

Does tapping a bank card automatically buy the correct HSL ticket?
No. With contactless payment, select the required zones on the reader first and then tap the card.
Can I use an HSL ticket on all trains in Finland?
No. An HSL ticket covers eligible public transport within the HSL fare area. Intercity or other travel outside that area requires the appropriate VR or other ticket.
