    Short answer

The consultant residence permit is for confirmed consultant work and may cover work for a maximum of one year. For longer work Migri directs applicants to the employed-person permit. Work may be paid employment or trade/business without establishing a company; supply and client contracts are important. The main income must come from the work on which the application is based. Paid employment must meet the applicable collective agreement; if none applies or the work is part-time, at least EUR 1,463/month is required in 2026. The same EUR 1,463 benchmark applies to trade/business or a combination of employment and trade/business. Taxable fringe benefits may be considered.

    1. Maximum one year

If the consulting assignment exceeds one year, this special route is not the correct long-term solution. TTOL or routes such as specialist/management should be compared depending on the work.

    2. Employee or trade/business

In an employee model the employer supplies terms of employment. In a trade/business model, client contracts or evidence explaining how income will be earned is required. This is not the same as establishing and operating a Finnish company as an entrepreneur.
