Finland D Visa 2026: Complete Guide to Eligibility, 100 Days, Fast Track, Family Members and Residence Card Delivery

Explains that Finland's D visa does not replace a residence permit but is a 100-day entry mechanism for holders/applicants in specified residence-permit categories, including certified-employer cases and family members; covers 2026 EUR 95/120 fees, passport handling and return D visas.

    Short answer

Finland's D visa is not an alternative to a residence permit. It is an accelerated-entry mechanism for certain third-country nationals who have been granted or are applying for an eligible Finnish residence permit. The D visa is valid for up to 100 days and must overlap with the residence permit for at least one day. Its main benefit is that after a positive residence-permit decision, the traveller can receive a D-visa sticker in the passport and travel to Finland without waiting abroad for the residence-permit card; the card is delivered to a collection point in Finland. A D visa does not shorten residence-permit processing. The 2026 fee is EUR 95 online and EUR 120 on paper. Specialist, EU Blue Card, start-up entrepreneur, ICT specialist/manager, top/middle management, student and researcher permits are directly eligible; with a certified employer, a broader work-permit list including TTOL can qualify. Spouses and children under 18 of eligible principal applicants can also qualify in specified situations.

    1. A D visa is not a residence permit

A D visa can only be issued in connection with an eligible residence permit or based on an existing valid residence permit. It does not replace the substantive permit requirements.

If the residence permit is refused, the D visa does not create an independent residence right.

    2. The 100-day period and one-day overlap

A D visa can cover up to 100 days before the residence permit becomes valid, and the two validity periods must overlap by at least one day.

The D visa becomes valid after a positive decision. Where a residence permit is applied for far in advance of its start date, simultaneous D-visa issuance may not be possible.

    3. Which residence permits are eligible?

Migri's directly eligible list includes specialist, EU Blue Card, start-up entrepreneur, ICT specialist/manager, top or middle management, studies and researcher residence permits.

The eligible list can change with legislation and Migri guidance, so the current D-visa page should be checked at filing.

    4. Expanded eligibility with a certified employer

Where the employer has employer certification and the applicant is applying through that certified employer, D-visa eligibility expands. It includes TTOL and several post-study/research and other work routes.

Migri also lists religious-community work, culture/arts, mass media, international organisations, company-arrival preparation, machine/system delivery, athletes/coaches, consultants, visiting teachers/lecturers/trainers and intergovernmental-agreement permits in the certified-employer category.

    5. Can spouses and children get a D visa?

The spouse and children under 18 of an eligible principal applicant can apply for D visas when applying for family-ties permits at the same time, or where the principal already holds an eligible permit.

A parent/guardian of an underage student can also apply together with a family-ties permit. The family identification code helps link applications, but Migri states that submitting without the code does not delay processing.

    6. Application process and 2026 fees

A D visa can be filed together with the residence permit through Enter Finland or on paper. If the D visa is applied for later, only a paper application is available.

The 2026 processing fee is EUR 95 online and EUR 120 on paper. A first-residence-permit applicant must visit a Finnish mission or VFS for identity verification. A valid passport and compliant passport photograph are required.

    7. Passport handling and residence-permit card delivery

The D-visa sticker is affixed to the passport by the mission. Migri recommends leaving the passport with the mission/VFS where feasible; otherwise having to resubmit the passport for the sticker can reduce the time-saving benefit.

After the residence permit and D visa are granted, the residence-permit card is sent to a collection point in Finland, generally within about two weeks. A Finnish address and the applicant's own email/phone details should be provided correctly.

    8. When a D visa may not help

Migri recommends D visa especially where the applicant can travel to Finland within roughly two weeks after the residence permit is granted. If travel is not possible and nobody can collect the card in Finland, it may add little value.

For visa-exempt nationals, people already holding a Schengen-area residence permit, or applicants who must travel to another country for the sticker, D visa may not materially reduce waiting time.

    9. Return D visa when the residence-permit card is lost abroad

A separate return-D-visa route exists where a person still holds a valid Finnish residence permit but the physical residence-permit card is lost, stolen, damaged or expired while abroad.

Visa-exempt nationals may not need it. This route does not create a new residence permit; it facilitates return for someone whose residence right is still valid.

    10. Work and Schengen travel

The D visa enables entry and Schengen travel, but the right to work comes from the residence permit, not the visa. Migri states that work cannot begin before the residence permit is valid, except for work that does not require a permit.

Travel elsewhere in Schengen is possible during D-visa validity, subject to the residence-permit situation and applicable host-state rules.

    11. D-visa checklist

Used correctly, D visa speeds up the logistics of entry and card delivery; it does not make the person more eligible for a residence permit or shorten the residence-permit decision itself.

    Checklist

    • Eligible residence-permit category?
    • If certified employer is needed, is certification valid?
    • Principal and family applications linked/simultaneous where needed?
    • Expectation clear that D visa does not shorten permit processing?
    • Can travel within roughly two weeks of positive decision?
    • Can passport be left with mission/VFS?
    • 100-day and minimum one-day overlap planned correctly?
    • Finnish address/card collection details ready?
    • 2026 fee EUR 95 online / EUR 120 paper?
    • No work before residence permit becomes valid?
    • Could visa-free status/existing Schengen permit make D visa unnecessary?
    • If card lost/expired abroad, is return-D route the correct one?
    Frequently asked questions

    Common questions about this topic

Does a D visa replace a residence permit?

No. It is an accelerated-entry mechanism connected to an eligible residence permit.

Does a D visa speed up the residence-permit decision?

No. Migri explicitly states that it does not shorten residence-permit processing. The benefit comes after grant: you do not need to wait abroad for the card.

Can a TTOL applicant get a D visa?

TTOL is not on the general direct list by itself, but it can qualify where the employer has employer certification and the case meets Migri's certified-employer rules.

Can I start work immediately with a D visa?

Only once your residence permit and work right are valid. The D visa itself does not create a right to work.
