Volunteering in Finland through a qualifying programme, financing, programme agreement and distinction from paid employment.

    Sources checked · 2026-08-24Reading time · 22 min

    Short answer

The volunteering residence permit is for persons coming to Finland through a qualifying volunteer programme. Sufficient financial resources must be secured through the volunteer programme. The genuine volunteering/learning purpose, duties, duration, supervision and financing should be documented. This route cannot be used to disguise ordinary paid employment as unpaid volunteering.

    1. The programme must be genuine

The label 'volunteer' is not enough. The organiser, programme structure, duties, learning/social objective, supervision and duration should be explained.

    2. Means of support

Migri requires sufficient financial resources to be secured through the volunteer programme. Accommodation, meals, allowances/benefits and other support should be clearly stated in the agreement.

    3. Common mistakes

Source check: 24 August 2026. Recheck programme-specific requirements and the processing fee with Migri on the filing date.
