What do we assess in this service?
An extended permit is not one single category
The correct extended-permit application depends on the basis of residence: work, family ties, studies, entrepreneurship or another ground. If the circumstances have changed, the new ground must be assessed instead of automatically repeating the previous application.
Apply in Finland before the current permit expires
An extended residence permit is applied for in Finland. Filing before the current permit expires is important. An online application submitted no later than the last day of validity is considered filed in time, even if the identity appointment takes place later according to Migri's instructions.
How early should you apply?
Migri generally advises applicants not to submit an extension much earlier than needed; the general extended-permit guidance refers to about three months before expiry, while some grounds have more specific timing. Work-based extensions can have a shorter recommended filing window. The correct instruction is checked for the actual permit category.
Right to work while the application is pending
When an extended-permit application is filed in time, residence and work rights can continue under the conditions attached to the previous permit while the application is pending. The exact right to work depends on the existing permit and the new application. A late application can interrupt the right to work.
Changed employer or changed ground
A new employer, different occupational field, changed family situation, study status or move into entrepreneurship can change which application and work-right rules apply. These changes should be assessed before filing rather than treated as a routine renewal.
Typical preparation
- Current residence-permit card and passport
- Evidence for the continuing or new residence ground
- Current employment and salary documents where relevant
- Family, study or business evidence where relevant
- Income and means-of-support evidence where the route requires it
- Enter Finland application and identity-verification plan
Fees and processing time
There is no single extension fee or processing estimate that applies to every residence-permit ground. Migri publishes category-specific fees and processing estimates. ENB does not promise a fixed decision date, and the current authority fee is checked for the selected application before filing.
What ENB does
- Checks the correct extension ground and filing window
- Reviews whether changed circumstances require a different application
- Builds the document checklist
- Flags right-to-work risks before filing
- Structures the Enter Finland submission
- Supports additional-information responses
Travel caution
If the previous permit card expires while an extension is pending, international travel can create re-entry and document issues. Travel should be assessed against current Migri and border-authority instructions before departure.

Open toolsFrequently asked questions
Where do I apply for a Finnish extended residence permit?
An extended permit is applied for in Finland, normally through Enter Finland. The correct form depends on the ground for residence.
What happens if I apply before my current permit expires?
A timely application can preserve residence and work rights under the conditions of the previous permit while the extension is pending. The exact right to work must be checked for the specific permit.
Is there one fixed extension fee?
No. The authority fee and processing estimate depend on the permit category, so they must be checked for the selected application.
