Extending a Residence Permit in Finland

1. First check whether your current permit grounds still exist

Migri can extend a residence permit when the requirements for the permit continue to be met. If your employment, entrepreneurship, studies or family circumstances have changed, do not automatically re-use the old permit category. It may be possible to apply for an extended permit on new grounds that match your current situation.

For example, if family ties have ended but you now have employment or a study place in Finland, assess the new basis instead of trying to extend an old family permit unchanged. Likewise, changes in employer, field of work or company role can require a new assessment of work-based permit conditions.

2. Submit the application before your current permit expires

Timing is one of the most important parts of an extension. Migri's general guidance requires an extended-permit application to be submitted before the current permit expires; an online application submitted on the last day of validity is considered to have arrived in time. Late filing can create refusal risk and problems with work rights.

The general page says not to apply earlier than three months before expiry. Some category-specific pages, such as work-based extensions, recommend applying about two months before expiry. Plan the timetable using the current page for your specific permit rather than a generic estimate.

3. Timely filing is critical for work rights

Migri states that timely filing can preserve lawful residence and continuation of the previous work right during processing, subject to the applicable rules. The scope of the work right nevertheless depends on the permit type and whether the new work fits the conditions attached to the previous permit.

For example, in work-based extensions, continuing with the same employer can often allow work to continue, whereas moving to a completely different field can change the result. If the application was submitted only after the permit expired, do not assume that the work right continues automatically.

4. Reflect changes in work, income and employment terms accurately

Employment contract, working hours, salary, employer, field and continuity of work can matter for a work-based extension. Do not submit an old contract while the actual situation is materially different. Where the employer must provide information through Enter Finland, make sure it is completed in time.

For entrepreneur permits, actual business activity, financial position, income and the entrepreneur's role in the company should be current. For study permits, the right to study, progress, means of support and any insurance requirements are reassessed under the relevant category guidance.

5. In family extensions, assess whether the family grounds remain the same

Migri distinguishes between continuing on the basis of the same spouse or family relationship and applying on the basis of a new relationship. Divorce, separation, custody changes or a change in the sponsor's status in Finland can affect the correct permit grounds.

If the original family relationship no longer exists but you now have employment, studies or another independent permit ground in Finland, assess that route. Presenting an old family relationship as continuing when circumstances have changed can create serious credibility problems.

6. Some permit categories cannot be extended beyond their maximum duration

Migri notes that some permits, including au pair, internship, ICT and Working Holiday categories, cannot be extended in the same category once the maximum validity period has been used. If you wish to remain in Finland, assess in time whether another lawful permit basis is available.

The same planning logic applies where a person may now qualify for permanent residence: rather than automatically renewing another fixed-term permit, check separately whether permanent residence or P-EU status is appropriate and available.

7. Keep the application active while waiting for the decision

Monitor Enter Finland messages, requests for additional information and any identification or appointment requirements. Events that can affect the decision—such as a new passport, job change, birth of a child, divorce, income change or address change—may require the application to be updated.

Retain a complete copy of the application, attachments and later submissions. An extension application becomes part of the documented history that may later matter in permanent residence, citizenship or another permit process.
