Finland Residence Permit for Visiting Teachers, Lecturers and Instructors 2026

1. Who is it for?

The applicant must work as a visiting teacher, lecturer or instructor based on an invitation/agreement. Ordinary permanent teaching employment should not be confused with this temporary visiting route.

2. Maximum one year and income

Work under this route may last a maximum of one year. Longer employment requires a residence permit for an employed person or another suitable route.

If no collective agreement applies or the work is part-time, the 2026 minimum is EUR 1,463/month. The same benchmark applies to trade/business or mixed income.

3. Permit-free teacher work up to 90 days

Under Migri's work-without-permit rules, a teacher/expert may work for up to 90 days without a residence permit if the stay in Finland is lawful and there is an invitation or signed contract. Visa requirements still apply.

5. What the invitation has to contain

This permit is granted on the invitation of an educational or research institution in Finland, so the invitation letter is the file's load-bearing document. It should carry the institution's name and registration details, the role of the person invited, the subject of the teaching or work, the start and end dates, the weekly teaching load and who pays what. The signatory's authority to represent the institution should be shown as well.

The commonest problem is a letter that stays vague. A sentence such as "will be hosted as a guest within our cooperation" does not stand in for a description of the role and does not explain where the payment comes from. If the period is written as something general like "a term", how long a permit should be granted becomes unclear too. Writing the dates, the amount and the role as figures prevents a later request for clarification.

6. The one-year ceiling, and what follows it

This route is designed for short academic assignments and its duration is limited. Planning on continuous extension in the same category is unwise: if the assignment will run past a year, or stops being temporary and becomes an established post, the right move is to a work-based, specialist or researcher permit. Which one follows from where the weight of the duties lies.

The most critical part of the move is timing. The new application should be filed while the current permit is still valid; otherwise continuity of work is put at risk. The term of the contract with the institution and the term of the permit are often not the same, so put them side by side and see which ends first. If the role is turning towards research, the researcher permit's own conditions — the hosting agreement above all — should be prepared in advance.
